New European Bauhaus in the Liguria Region

In 2022, ianusGroup supported Regione Liguria in the development of their New European Bauhaus strategy. The Italian coastline region has started a journey to target sustainability as a main focus for its economic and social development, a crucial choice that has made the region a frontrunner in the country.

The New European Bauhaus, one of the strategies being put forward with the EU Green Deal, promotes a new, revised way of conceiving architecture and urban planning, promoting a beautiful, sustainable and inclusive way of living. Regione Liguria is particularly interested in the strategy, due to its widely present coastal and rural nature and artistic and historical patrimony, that both need to be preserved for future generations.

To kickstart its journey in the New European Bauhaus and present it to local entrepreneurs, organizations and Universities, Regione Liguria has organised an event on 9 June 2022 in Genova, Italy, supported by ianusGroup.

The morning session of the event gathered outstanding speakers from the European Commission, the Liguria region and other local organisations such as the University of Genova, startups, research centres. These speakers shared their view on how beneficial the New European Bauhaus could effectively be for the region, from an architectural, environmental, and social perspective; discussions were moderated by Luca Selva, CEO of ianusGroup. This part of the event also included a presentation from local high school students on ideas for local development that could suit the regione. Finally, participants go to hear a speech from Giovanni Toti, President of the Region, who underlined how Liguria should lead the way in Italy on this topic.

After a lunch hosted by the Architecture Department of the University of Genova, participants got to participate in a collaborative workshop to discuss possible ideas for the development of the region. A total of nine roundtables were put in place, divided in the three categories that best reflect the region’s composition: coastal, rural and urban areas. Each table was moderated by an expert, who facilitated the discussion through the journey to reach the most sustainable, inclusive and beautiful idea. The outcome of the discussion of each roundtable was then presented to other participants in plenary, and the best projects for each area was chosen. The Liguria region will support the first phase of the development of the project by providing expert guidance, in the effort of making it leave the paper and become a reality.

ianusGroup is proud to have supportes the region in this first effort to implement the New European Bauhaus, and is now continuing the work of establishing Regione Liguria as a frontrunner of sustainable development, not only in Italy, but also in Europe.
